Pisces

19-21 February - 19-21 March
Yin - Mutable - Water

The appearance of the first green twigs and the first tiny flowers after the dead of winter are signs of the Early Spring - slow awakening of Nature. A time of a quiet hope, a beginning of the revival and prayers for a good harvest.

In the Slavic tradition, in early spring, male youth wore 'turonie', that is, a hairy scarecrows with horned heads. This rite consisted of smashing girls with the fresh twigs and pouring water over them - a magical procedure to increase fertility. It was a blessing of the willow buds, considered a magical way to wish health. February name is derived from cleansing procedures performed in this month in the ancient Rome, and not only there - this is a start of the Spring Clean

It was also a time to predict the Summer weather - nice weather in February-March promised warm Summer, snow - good harvest, warm wind - wet summer, north wind- cool Summer.

Piscean Landscape

In some parts of the world the feminine side of Pisces is celebrated with the 8th March - the International Women's Day - making peace, celebrating women's qualities: care, nurture, love, beauty.

On the 17th March is St. Patrick's Day, a national day for Ireland and Irish people but in all due to be the reminiscent of the old Celtic Spring festival - an old pan-European fest celebrating the greening of Nature. It marks the rebirth of the Green Man, a vegetation deity, merged with St. Patrick.

Finally, it is of course the time of Great Lent - the six weeks before Easter is marked by fasting and other pious practices. No parties or celebrations should be held, and people refrained from eating rich foods, such as meat, dairy, fat, and sugar.

It was not difficult to observe the Great Lent - it was the time when reserve supplies and resources had been at the lowest, stored provisions near the finish. To survive, people needed to help each other, to work for common good, to share and hoped for an early harvest.

Pisces is a significant constellation today - the Vernal Equinox lies within it.

The original drawings of this constellation had a pair of fish swimming together; today they are drawn facing in opposite directions tied by a cord which runs through Aries and Aquarius. This symbolises the tides and ties in life, both in a positive and negative sense.  In mystical terms, Pisces represents the great ocean from which all life evolved and where all boundaries are dissolved.

People born under Pisces Sign may feel like they were plunged into this world - as if they were suddenly awakened to this harsh reality. They swim through life gracefully with great dedication and they rarely forget that the material life is the only one.

They usually suffer here; nostalgic, sensitive, yearning for the better world or the world to be better.; feeling awkward, uncomfortable - on the inside; on the outside - showing a great sense of devotion and self-sacrifice. The self-sacrifice syndrome pushes them to be helpful, useful, overly busy. They often end up as workaholics.

The end of the Piscean month falls in March: named after Mars, the god of war and its Marching Troops. It translates Piscean character, that of Multitude, of Sacrifice, of Devotion, into military-like observance.

“To be in the world, but not of the world” is a Piscean motto.
