The basics of Magic and Sorcery

“Magic comprises the most profound contemplation of the most secret things, their nature, power, quality, substance, and virtues, as well as the knowledge of their whole nature.”

H.C. Agrippa von Nettesheim, De Occulta Philosophia, 1533

The magic most people know of is a form of an illusion performed on stage. The real magic has the same 'word ingredients' - that life is an 'illusion' - a perception of our five senses, and that our is life is a 'stage'. Both claim to 'bent the reality', and 'make extraordinary things happen', living us in awe and astonishment. Both require skills and the use of the most magical tool we are equipped with - our brains.

How to start your adventure with real magic? First, as with all spiritual quests - allow it to happen. We are so immersed in physical reality and cold logic, in what our five senses can perceive, that we lost touch with the more subtle occurrences in our life.

Magic is an activity that connects other dimensions with our own reality. In order to perform it, you will need to learn a 'magical state of being', a different set of vibration than those you experience in your normal daily life.

You need to reset your brain to feel different energies, experience more subtle states of mind and being. A perfect feeling of integrity, unity, alignment, invincibility, certainty, creativity, combined with heightened self-awareness - this is how words would describe it.

The intention is the key. Intent to achieve this state, meditate, contemplate, ponder, stop your world to a short halt during the day and feel the environment you are in as well as your inner world, the whole body.

Different emotions live in different parts of our bodies. The way to deal with negative feelings is to accept them and see them from a very distant perspective. See if your body is tense in any part. You need to feel positive, comfortable and confident in your own body in order to perform magic.

The most important part of our bodies, apart from the brain, is the belly, our guts, literally. If you struggle with anxiety, low mood, consider changing your diet. There is a section related to how diet can influence our mood, check it out.

In order to exercise your intuition, it will be a good idea to learn meditation. One important thing to consider - if your life-style and work require a lot of sitting down, do not choose sitting down meditation. Walking or jogging would be better for you. If you have an active lifestyle and feel physically tired, sitting mediation is best.

See how intuition works best with you. There may be a different kinds, depends on what personality you are: more physical, emotional, intellectual or inspirational. Intuitive hints may come as certain physical sensation, feelings, ideas, or urges.

I am all against using a lot of magic equipment. Keeping magic private, to yourself is what in today world seems to work best. But if you are a very physical type of personality you may find working with magic tools interesting, inspiring and grounding.

Magic spells

The words you prepare have to  ring a true bell within your whole being. You may choose lyrics from a song you particularly like describing what you would like to achieve. Invoke them in your imagination as often as possible. Incantations are the old way of doing spell magic, of uttering the words that mean so much to you. Do not be attached to the outcome, let it fly in space and dance. Do what you need to do, do not bother yourself with taking too much action, wait until an visible opportunity will come. You will know when and how to act.

You see, what we are trying to do here is to not live on a default system you were programmed to live. We all are programmed for the mere sense of basic survival. Life is not interested in giving us more than that, and sometimes it is even less than that when we need to fight with harsh circumstances.

Life forces are not really interesting in you, not even in humankind, life is interested in life itself - to carry on, regardless. These are non-human energies, and realising this can be quite scary. But do know that there are other possibilities available to us if we will awaken to them. Living a more conscious life, being more influential, seeing the little intention happening in your life, growing your awareness - these are substantial things that should matter to you.

Some people are born with extraordinary powers without realising them. We are not equal. Those people are big business personalities who have strong executive powers. Magic is really nothing else but a strong executive power - to make things you want to - happen.

The Four Elements

The Four Classical Elements are the basis for many metaphysical subjects such as astrology, tarot, alchemy. Ancient philosophers had seen the world to be composed of a mixture of Earth, Water, Air, and Fire. Also four states of matter recognised in modern science are: solid, liquid, gas, and plasma.

"Earth My Body; Water My Blood; Air My Breath; and Fire My Spirit"*

Earth is the 'first' element, most dense, solid and immovable. It is the foundation, the core and the grounding of the material world, and it corresponds to physical body, the bones and the muscles.

Water is the 'second' element, most soft, cold, fluent, flowing, influenced and influential. Water needs a solid container of the Earth element. It corresponds to our circular system of blood and hormones and the emotional states.

Air is the 'third' element, most subtle, neutral, ephemeral, evanescent, elusive, nimble and pervasive. Versatile, all-encompassing. It corresponds to the nervous system, intellect, thoughts, communication.

Fire is the 'fourth' element, most active, volatile, hot, fierce, blazing, transforming. It corresponds with the digestive system, energy, movement, direct action, behaviour.

All elements are of equal importance.

The nature of the elements can be assigned to the corresponding four seasons, four parts of the day, four directions, four main phases of the Moon, four cycles of our life (and everything we do in life): the growing (in physicality), the maturation (emotional), the maturing (intellectual) and the ageing (spiritual). As this is a cycle it never ends, only repeats in cyclical manner.

Four Personality Types

The four personality types were known in the ancient times (called temperaments), and they are sometimes used in modern psychology:

Earth - Physical
They are very down-to earth, practical, reliable, deliberate, persistent. They like routine, procedures, slow motion. They take care of the material world and are interested in the tangible material realm. May become too rigid, stubborn, lazy. Their physical constitution is sturdy, earthy, stocky.

Water - Emotional
They are very sensitive and often introverted. The constant flow of feelings can be a blessing (intuition) or a curse (moodiness). They easily connect with anything relating to art, religion, and romance. They are emphatic, easily touched and easily influenced. The physical body is usually round and soft.
A sculptor is an example of Earth-Water type. These are people who do creative work with their hands (arts and crafts, cooking, furniture making). Painting in itself is solely a Water element activity.

Air - Intellectual
They are the thinkers, their minds are preoccupied with theories and ideas. Intellectuals have usually little appreciation for hard physical work, they do not like the sweat and toil. They have lofty minds and tend to look from above on those 'below' them. They physical constitution is usually thin, bony.
The combination of Air and Water for example gives a very reflective, introverted, sensitive personality that is less active on the outside, preferring to contemplate life. It can offer true insights, intuitive powers, greater understanding. Such a person can be called lazy by the Earth/Fire types.

Fire - Spiritual
They are the passionate doers, with bold executive powers and willpower. They like action, they are energetic, inspirational, innovative, entertaining. With vivid self-expression and confidence, they may become tyrannical or undertake a careless risk. The physical body is usually strong and stringy.

The Eternal Dance

Everything in Nature is moving. We can ascribe four different modes of moving action to the four elements to understand more how everything permeates and penetrates one another.

Earth Motor - as a tangible thing

Water Motion - as in the e/motion

Air - Movement - in a broad sense

Fire Mobility - as a singular act

Four in One

According to the esoteric tradition, the four elements can be described as a four components of a chariot, that also represents our constituents:

Coach - Body - Earth
Horses - Emotions - Water
Coachman - Mind - Air
Lord, Master - Self - Fire

Our Body is the chariot/coach; it has to be in a good shape to do its job.
The horses are the Emotions that twitch and pull and sometimes drag us along.
The coachman is our Intellect- attention, the part of the mind that does its job and drives the business of life.
And the whole coach of life is taking a ride with the passenger, our Will to make things happen the way the passenger or owner wants.

Our astro-chart shows which part of the system we are most connected to.
Some people are driven by the Body, some by Emotion, Some by Intellect, some by Self

In some cases the coachman (Intellect) runs the coach (Body) havoc or astray where the connection (respect) towards the Master (Self) is not present.

In other cases, the coachman does not take care of the coach (body) and/or the horses (emotions), and they go into disrepair and despair.

Four Elements in Modern Times

There are many inspirations behind the four elements and the four seasons in art.

See how these female figures on A. Mucha drawing fit in the depiction of the slumber of Winter (Earth), the daydreaming or awakening of Spring (Water), the confidence of awareness of Summer (Air), the reflective and meditative state of Autumn (Fire).

There is also an interesting relation to our modern life and a sort of confirmation of the reliability of the four elements - there are four main sources of renewable energy:

The Fifth Element

Apart from the four suits used in card decks, there is a unique fifth element in the Tarot deck, the Major Arcana. These are the forces behind Providence, something beyond our everyday reach, the forces that ultimately shape the four elements, the Archetypes.

Pentacles - Earth
Swords - Air
Cups - Water
Wands - Fire

The World card depicts four ancient emblems in its corner:
- a man
- a eagle
- a bull
- a lion

They relate to the four Zodiac signs: Aquarius (Air), Scorpio (Water) (in ancient times also represented as the bird of prey with its strong beak and talons), Taurus (Earth) and Leo (Fire)

These are the four fixed modalities of the Zodiac and have been used in Christian symbology to represent four Evangelists, authors of the New Testament's main components.

The Magical Seven

The extraordinary prevalence of the number seven is present in many cultures and spans over centuries.

There were seven wonders of the classical world; seven wise men in ancient Greece; beyond seven hills and seven rivers the story-telling begins; the seventh son of the seventh son is an incredibly important figure in fairy tales; there were also seven sisters; seven metals in alchemy, seven sins in Christianity, seven days of God's creation, so we have seven days in a week; seven continents, seven hills of Rome, seven heavens in Koran, there are seven worlds in Hindu mythologies, seven chakras in Eastern medicine, we have seven visible celestial bodies in our solar system, there are seven colours in the light spectrum, known as the rainbow; seven notes in the musical octave, and seven waves in the electromagnetic spectrum.

Clearly, the number seven tells us something.

In metaphysics, this number relates to seven basic vibrations, forming our world. In astrology, these are represented by Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn,

According to the hermetic doctrine: As above so below, the seven energies of the visible and invisible world can be pictured as below:

The seven forces/archetypes are the ever-present influences that shape our Universe, our world, and our life. The above diagram shows a metaphysical relation, not a scientific theory.

The seven 'bodies' have a particular meaning in astrology and metaphysics, but let's first start with the two middle columns: the Visible Light, and Electromagnetic Spectrum.

Visible Light

Light comes as seven basic colours through a prism. We know it as a rainbow. The ancient people perceived a rainbow as a message from the gods or the bridge to heaven. These seven colours happen to have a relation to the seven visible celestial spheres of our Solar System and main seven chakras.

In the reverse order:

Sun - Violet
Moon - Indygo
Mercury - Blue
Venus - Green
Mars - Yellow
Jupiter - Orange
Saturn - Red

Electromagnetic Spectrum

The electromagnetic spectrum is classified into seven basic types, however, all are manifestations of the same phenomenon - photons (light particles) travelling through space. Those ranges are divided into seven separate sections, due to their different interactions with matter. The frequencies of the waves are from a fraction of an atomic nucleus to thousands of miles.

Gamma rays (shortest wavelength)
X-rays
Ultraviolet
Visible light
Infrared
Microwaves
Radio waves (longest wavelength)

The longest wavelengths can be the size of the Universe itself.

The human eye can only see a short span of the electromagnetic spectrum, the Visible Light, the interplay of the seven basic colours.

All forms of electromagnetic radiation can be described as both waves and particles and this dual nature of light and matter is studied by quantum mechanics.

Gamma rays ('Sun'), are produced by nuclear reactions in the hottest and most energetic objects in the universe, such as neutron stars, pulsars, supernova explosions, and the areas around the mysterious black holes. The process of nuclear fusion powers the sun and all the other stars.

The energy of the gamma rays keeps the Sun’s core hot. Some of those gamma rays escape into the Sun's outer layers. As they lose energy, they change into ultraviolet, infrared and visible light. The infrared light allows the Earth to keep warm, and the visible light allows the plants to grow. The plants produce oxygen that sustains other organic life on Earth, including humans.

They are of the shortest wavelength and carry the most energy. With a strong penetration of matter, they can easily be deadly to biological life. Thanks to Earth's atmosphere, a large fraction of gamma rays from space is blocked. However, there are some small quantities of this radiation, generated by lightning bolts (in nature, in small quantities ) and by nuclear explosions (by humans) and a thick shielding of dense materials is necessary for dealing with this radiation directly.

X-rays ('Moon') come from extremely hot space objects, such as pulsars, remnants of galactic supernovae, binary systems with neutron stars, and the increment of black holes. The massive and compact space objects strip material from their neighbours to form an inward spiralling disk of hot X-rays. In some cases, the exact mechanisms of X-ray production are still uncertain or unknown.

They are similar to gamma rays in frequency and penetration but they are produced from a different atomic source. Gamma-rays come from nuclear reactions in the atomic nuclei, X-rays - by ejected accelerating electrons pushed to nearly the speed of light. The acceleration produces a very powerful beam of focused X-ray light. The Sun's corona radiates mostly x-rays.

X-rays are widely used to penetrate inside opaque objects -  most well-known in medical radiography, tomography, airport security scanners; in the industry for testing of flaws and cracks in solid structures, in astronomy, for the study of distant celestial objects. X-ray radiation is also used to kill tumour cells, and in agriculture, the irradiation of some foods is used to inhibit the growth of bacteria.

X-rays are actually faintly visible to the dark-adapted naked eye but the dangers and harm do not allow for many experiments.

Ultraviolet (UV) ('Mercury') is present in 10 per cent of the Sun's radiation, the sunlight. It is also produced by mercury-vapour lamps, tanning lamps, and black lights. It can cause chemical reactions and causes many substances to glow or fluoresce.

Effects of exposure of the skin to UV light causes sunburn along with an increased risk of skin cancer.  Part of ultraviolet light, however, is also responsible for the formation of vitamin D. The UV spectrum, thus, has effects both beneficial and harmful to life. Insects, birds, and some mammals can see near-UV.

Visible light ('Venus') can be perceived by the human eye. The main source of light on Earth is the Sun. It provides energy for the plants to grow and the process of photosynthesis provides virtually all the energy used by other living organisms.

Historically, another important source of light for humans has been fire and with the development of electricity, electric lighting. Some species of animals generate their own light, a process called bioluminescence. The study of light, known as optics, is an important research area in modern physics.

The light speed - 299,792,458 meters per second, is one of the fundamental constants of nature. All types of electromagnetic radiation always move at this speed in a vacuum.

Infrared (IR) ('Mars') is emitted or absorbed by molecules when they change their rotational-vibrational movements. Generally invisible to the human eye, although light from specially pulsed lasers can be seen under certain conditions. Most of the thermal radiation emitted by objects near room temperature is infrared.

Nearly half of the total energy from the Sun that arrives on Earth is in the form of infrared and it has a critical effect on Earth's climate.

Infrared radiation is used in a variety of applications. There are extensive uses in the military such as target surveillance and tracking.  Night-vision devices use near-infrared radiation for the detection of living organisms, for example. Infrared thermal equipment is used to detect heat loss in insulated systems, to detect overheating, in weather forecasting, and in short-range wireless communication, where signals travel from a few centimetres to several meters.

Microwave ('Jupiter') travel by line-of-sight, following the Earth's surface, or reflect from the ionosphere. Terrestrial microwave communication is limited by the visual horizon to about 40 miles (64 km).

Microwaves are widely used in the modern world, for example in wireless networks, television, mobile phones, radars, satellites, spacecraft communication, remote sensing, amplifiers, collision avoidance systems, garage door opening, keyless entry systems, and microwave ovens.

Microwave transmitters and receivers, the dish antennas, produce microwave beams that can be directed like a torchlight. Microwave radar is widely used for guiding aeroplanes and vessels, and for detecting speeding motorists.

The microwaves have a heating effect and destroy a living tissue when the temperature of the tissue exceeds 43° C. Exposure to intense microwaves is harmful, the lens of the human eye is particularly affected. A repeated and extended exposure can result in cataracts. Microwaves can have adverse effects on the electrochemical balance of the brain and the development of a fetus.

Microwave cosmic background radiation is considered by many to be the remnant of the primaeval fireball by the Big-Bang.

Radio waves ('Saturn') are generated by charged particles undergoing acceleration, such as time-varying electric currents. Naturally occurring radio waves are emitted by lightning and space objects.

Generated artificially are used by transmitters and received by radio receivers, using antennas. Widely used in modern technology for mobile radio communication, broadcasting, radar and radio navigation systems, communications satellites, wireless computer networks and many other applications.

Radio waves can penetrate nonconducting materials, such as wood, bricks, and concrete, fairly well, however, a radio wave may be disturbed by buildings and other large objects.

A combination of radio waves and strong magnetic fields is used by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to produce diagnostic pictures of parts of the human body and brain without apparent harmful effects.

To prevent interference between different users, the artificial generation and use of radio waves are strictly regulated by law, coordinated by an international body called the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). The radio spectrum is divided into a number of radio bands on the basis of frequency, allocated to different uses.

Musical Octave

It contains number eight, as the 'do' is repeated in a higher tone at its end. It relates to cycles within cycles, doubling its own frequency. The octave is a natural phenomenon that has been referred to as the "basic miracle of music", the use of which is "common in most musical systems".

The major scale is one of the most commonly used musical scales. It is made up of seven notes and two different systems to name them:

C D E F G A B (C)
and
DO RE MI FA SOL LA SI (DO)

In terms of music, an octave is a distance between one note (like C#) and the next note bearing its same name (the next C# that’s either higher or lower).

In terms of physics, an octave is a distance between one note and another note that’s double its frequency. For instance, note A4 is the sound of vibration at 440 Hz. Note A5 is the sound of vibration at 880 Hz. Going in the other direction, note A3 is the sound of vibration at 220Hz.

Isaac Newton had associated the seven solfège syllables with the seven colours of the rainbow and surmised that each colour vibrated accordingly. Thus, red has the least amount of vibration while violet vibrates the most.

Pitch Solfège

C do         Red / Saturn
D re     Orange / Jupiter
E mi     Yellow / Mars
F fa     Green / Venus
G sol         Blue / Mercury
A la     Indigo / Moon
B ti/si      Purple/Violet / Sun

Chakras

The relation to the rainbow spectrum with the seven main chakras can be interpreted as the human body is a heavenly bridge between Earth/Matter and Space/Spirit. More about it in a separate article.

Alchemical Seven

Seven 'planets' had been related to the seven metals in alchemy:

Sun - Gold
Moon - Silver
Mercury - Mercury
Venus - Copper
Mars - Iron
Jupiter - Tin
Saturn - Lead

Traditional hermetism (alchemy) ascribes these colours to the Sun, Moon and planets:

Sun - Gold
Moon - Silver
Mercury - Yellow/Orange
Venus - Green
Mars - Red
Jupiter - Violet
Saturn - Black/ Brown

Seven Days of the Week

The Greeks named the days week after the sun, the moon and the five known planets, which were in turn named after the gods: Hermes, Aphrodite, Ares, Zeus, Cronos. The Greeks called the days of the week the Theon hemerai "days of the Gods". The Romans substituted the Greek names with equivalent gods:  Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jove (Jupiter), Saturn.
The Germanic people generally substituted roughly similar gods for the Roman gods, Tiu (Tyr), Woden, Thor, Frey, but did not substitute Saturn. It has been adopted in the English language.
There is some confusion left, mixing Mercury with Mars, and Venus with Jupiter. Let's put it straight:

Sunday -- Sun's day

Monday -- Moon's day

Tuesday -- Tiu's day - Mercury's day

Wednesday -- Woden's day, Venus' day

Thursday -- Thor's day, Mars' day

Friday -- Freya's day, Jupiter's days

Saturday -- Saturn's day

The Seven in Astrology

Most of us are familiar with the saying, after the book, The Women are from Venus, The Men are from Mars. What about the character of other celestial spheres? Jupiter is the archetype for a king-boss person and the mature age. Saturn is a personification of old age and the elderly. Mercury is a youngster and youthfulness. Moon is the archetypal mother, and Sun - the father.

In individual life, the Sun is conception, the Moon is the prenatal period and the birth, Mercury is childhood, Venus and Mars are adolescence years, Jupiter is adulthood, Saturn - the old age.

Seven Stages of Human History

Saturn
Stone Age. Hunters-Gatherers. Matriarchal.

Jupiter
Bronze Age. Patriarchal gods ex. Marduk, Zeus, Jupiter, Yahweh, and tribal, territorial kings. Agriculture.

Mars
Iron Age. Warriors and conquerors. The era of great empires of Alexander the Great, Roman Empire, Byzantine Empire, Holy Roman Empire.

Venus
Renessainse. The high development of the Arts and Humanities.

Mercury
The Age of Reason and Information. Development of Science and Technology.

Moon
Rise of Feminine powers, which also means motherly influence such as a deep sense of belonging and thus nationalism. We are on the verge of it or out of it.

Sun
Divinity, Ascension, Lightbody.

Each subsequent cycle is much shorter than the previous one, the same as it goes with the length of waves in the electromagnetic spectrum.

Crystal Stones - Introduction

The use of semiprecious stones and crystals has been valued for ages. Crystal healing is of course regarded as pseudo-scientific but I would suggest that the stones' natural beauty would rather have a positive effect on our psyche. Read the text on Scientific and Poetic Mind.

Many people claim that by wearing precious and semiprecious stones, they benefit from their subtle influence. These little natural gems are dug out from the belly of the Earth, they are minerals and have some electromagnetic weight to them.

Lithotherapists believe in those subtle effects. They say the energy of stones works on many mental levels: removing stress, calming down, soothing or invigorating, stimulating, giving confidence.

You can try the magic of crystals, precious and semi-precious stones by wearing them in your pocket or purse like a talisman. You can put them under the pillow, on your desk, or use them as a beautiful piece of protective or enhancing jewellery.

We all know how bad plastic is. When you look around - it's almost everywhere. Have o look into your jewellery box. Are there any cheap plastic pieces that are sold en masse, in every high-street store? It would be better to invest some money in semi-precious stones jewellery, and have additional benefits.

Below are old descriptions of the nature of some of the crystal stones and their 'powers'.

Have fun reading it and forgive the ancient language.
